You will have to have the tank removed and flushed out. Any other way is just asking for trouble. If they find rust in it, you'll have to replace it. Once rust starts, it never stops. That rust will chew up your fuel pump.

Rick is on the money, drop the tank, drain it, check for rust. If there isn't any rust, flush it, reinstall it, fill it up.

You don't say if the car was actually run after the water was poured into the tank or not, if so, then the entire fuel system needs to be flushed at least, and thoroughly checked.

You also don't say what 'a while ago' is either, a month? A year? It may ned a simple maintenance done on it, belt plugs, wires, oil change etc.

Drain the tank. It's the only way to get rid of a significant volume of water. Don't disconnect the fuel lines and try to use the fuel pump to empty it. And watch out for rust inside the tank - if there's any at all, it'll probably need to be replaced.

Good luck!

DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH WATER WAS POURED IN THE GAS TANK IT MIGHT BE EASY TO FIX. IF ITS NOT GALLONS OF WATER IN THE TANK YOU CAN BUY SOME DRY GAS FROM ANY AUTO STORE AND PUT IT IN THE GAS TANK

I would listen to rickinmn. Free advice from someone qualified is hard to come by. I also agree with his advice.
