The sperm are "transported" via the semen. So if they're dead they can't fertilize an egg but the semen is still present.

Infertility and ejaculation are different. In ejaculation, you will discharge semen. In fertility, the semen should have sufficient sperms. If the sperms are absent, it is called as infertility. One can perform regular sex even without sperms.
