Remember back when you had to get a blood test and wait three days before you could get married after you purchased the license? How about back when couples went through marriage counseling with the pastor of their church? How about an engagement having to be at least a year long if it was to be considered "respectable"? How about the families all got to know one another and worked together to make sure the young couple had a "good" start?
My first marriage lasted 7 years (we lived together for 3 years prior to that)...it ended in divorce (it was a marriage made in Hell). My second marriage lasted 7 years (we lived together for 1 year prior to that)...it ended in the death of my spouse (it was a marriage made in Heaven). Until this moment, I didn't realize that 7 was a "magic" number with me.
I think if people put God back into marriage where He belongs, divorce would be less common.

Yes. it should be harder to have kids too. I know that's biological, but there should be measures taken prior, or the newborns should be taken away until parents pass a course or something.
You should date for atleast a year. No arranged marriage or anything. Lie detector tests should be administered at random times. Divorce should take a year to be granted from the date filed. U should be ordered to live together until ur divorce is final. IF u marry, u should be required to marry someone who lives close to u. So u can actually get a better picture of who u are. U should only marry someone from ur own country u live. There are many more in my head, but they're not coming right now.
I"ve been married for six months, and it's my first.

This is both of ours first marriage. We have been married for 3 1/2 years.
I believe that the divorce rate is much too high. Alot of people get married not prepared for the challenges ahead. It gets too tough and they bail. Our pastor required us to do some counseling with him before our wedding. I really think this was a great idea. We discussed things that I honestly didn't think of before. Alot of what if type of questions. I also don't believe in little wedding chapels where you can get married by just signing a peice of paper, saying a vow, I do's and a kiss. I think that the time spent planning a proper wedding is also a time for thinking things through before the big day gets here. I say this after my mom and step-dad got married in a wedding chapel. But at the same time their situation was a little different then just saying "hey there's a chapel, lets get married." They had already tried planning two different weddings that seemed to get canceled for reasons other than their feelings for one another. So after living together for 9 years, and trying to have a proper wedding two different times, they just simply had a wedding that required no planning so it would not get canceled for a third time.

i don't agree to letting people dictate my life of anyone Else's but sometimes it is necessary i think that changing peoples opinions is a better way to many people look at marriage as a trial run lets see if this works the word till death due us part no longer applies to the American society which is to bad we suffer so many consequences because of this the main one kids not to mention what it does to you Ive been married for 6 yrs but i waited made sure that the guy i married would fit in my life for a lifetime i take his negatives with his positives as he does the same for me and somehow we always meet in the middle this i knew would be forever no divorce in my vocabulary not to say that its not right for some but most the time it could be avoided if you take everything in to consideration before you drive to Vegas if you are being abused or hurt in any way then yes separate yourself no need to put yourself in harms way

Does it hurt you personally that other people get married and then get divorce? It is unfortunate but it's none of my business. Other people can do whatever they want with their lives.
So why would you cause more trouble for those you get married and live happily for 50 years?
The first and the last one.

No. I think it should be harder to get divorced. Then maybe people would think twice about getting married. This is what we have: http://www.divorcereform.org/min.html 8/23/03.

I think it should be the opposite, that it should
be harder to get a divorce-still married
after 20yrs, marriage,it's still a good thing and too
many people do not appreciate the beauty of it.

I think everyone should be required to take marriage classes and find out if they are truly mature enough for marriage. Not that I am of course....

I don't know why everyone is defending marriage. Marriage ruins relationships and hurts children because married people are miserable. They should ban it instead.
