In a capitalistic society,Money makes the world go around. Companies use advertising to sell their products or services. Television is a media which the companies use. News shows are the least expensive to produce, so several will purchase this less expensive time. As a result the news show is shorter with more advertising than news content, which leads to more news segments to accomodate the advertisingSo the news runs from 5PM to 5:30; A new segment runs from 5:30 PM to 6:00PM at which time the network takes over for their 6:00 PM to 6:30 etc.

because the media knows that everyone (or a lot of people) is watching the news so its the perfect time to put ads on.
