Per the laws of thermodynamics, total entropy is always increased. It is possible to reduce the entropy locally but the entropy of the universe increases. I do not agree that life alone battles against it. There are lots of examples of processes where local order increases. When water freezes or when living things grow, locally, there is an increase in order (a decrease in disorder) but the processes that allow water to freeze or living things to grow create more disorder.

I hope this helps.

Life doesn't battle against entropy at all. Life is an extremely efficient contributor of entropy. A good 90% of the food energy you eat gets turned directly into body heat.
