Can you figure these out please! and expalin how u got the answer if u can:

1)A baseball player makes 168 hits in a season. The numbre of singles in 5 less than 3 times the number of extra base hits. How many extra hits did he make?

2) If 5 more than a certain number is tripled, the result is 72.what is the number?

3) 2 numbersd are in the ratio 5:7. If 12 is added to each number the ratio is 4:5. What are the original numbers?

4)2 motorists start toward eachother from cities 400 miles apart at 1:00 PM. One motorist travels at 42 MPH band the other travels at 38 MPH. When will they meet?

1)
Let s = number of singles
let e = number of extra bases

Then s = 3e -5
and s + e = 168

Use subsitution

2) Let x = the number
3*(x + 5) = 72


3) x/y = 5/7
(x+12)/(y+12) = 4/5


4) Let d = the distance traveled by first (42 mph) motorist when they meet

Then 400 - d = distance traveled by second motorist when they meet

Let t = the time when they meet

So d = 42t and 400-d = 38t

2. 3(x + 5) = 72 => 3x = 57 => x = 19. number is 19.

3. 7a = 5b and 5(a + 12) = 4(b + 12)
=> 5a -- 4b = --12
=> 5a -- 4(7a/5) = --12
=> 3a/5 = 12
=> a = 20, b = 7a/5 = 7*20/5 = 28
numbers are 20, 28 .

4. after 400/(42 + 38) hours = 5 hours at (1 + 5) PM = 6 PM

s= 3E - 5
168= s+ E

They're a system of equations, see? So in the second equation you sub. 3E - 5 for s
168= (3E-5) + E
168= 4E-5
+5 +5
173= 4E
E= 43. 25

2. The varible N is the number.
72= (5n) * 3

Do 5n times 3
72= 15n
N= 4.8

2) the answer is 19..
19 + 5= 24
24*3=72

I got this by doing it reverse..
72/3= 24
24-5=19
