My favorites are:
Louis XI, the "Spider King," part devious, part cruel, was the son of Charles VII, the king whose wazoo was saved by Joan of Arc. But Charles did manage to drive the English from most of France. Louis XI needed many intrigues to wrest power from many of his nobles. Louis reigned from 1641 - 1683

Enguerrand de Coucy, a powerful French nobleman who lived 1340 - 1397. His story is laboriously told by Barbara Tuchman in A Distant Mirror, a story of the calamitous 14th century.

Vercingetorix, the Gallic chieftan ( first century BCE) who gave Caesar's legions tough times in his Gallic Wars. I wish we could know more about him than from Caesar's accounts. Vercingetorix was treated badly after his defeat and capture, certainly not to Caesar's credit. But those were tough times.
