He has assumed powers that do not traditionally belong to the President. Control over war is a congressional matter and it was a mistake to hand that control over to the president in the months leading up to the war. I blame that on congress just as much as the president. The patriot act also puts more powers into the executive branch than existed before.

Yes. President Bush has signed more "Executive Orders" (which have the power of law without Congressional approval) and signing statements (he will sign a bill or law,but will chose what parts he will and will not follow) than any other President.
On a larger scale, the U.S. government is taking on more power to control the lives of the citizens and forcing state and local governments to do the same.

The presidential power is not changing. The position comes with a preset set of rules and guidelines. The powers of the president have been the same for more years than I care to remember. You're probably just becoming more aware of what goes on in politics.

I think so. Now, the U.S. is bending the act that states that people on American soil cannot be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment, in Guantanamo. It is definitely illegal, and against the simple rights of humanity. This is possible because of the influence of our president and those surrounding him. Also, they have many times influenced the Supreme Court to stop a law making it legal for people to have the freedom not to say the pledge of allegiance. definitely they have too much power.

No- the framers (writers of the constitution) put in a system of checks and balances to prevent (explained in Federalist paper 51) any one branch of government from accumulating too much power.

That's hard to say. Our political parties have done such a terrible job of leading us and we are in a difficult time. Some might say that SOMEONE has to lead past the petty squabbling that occurs when both sides are trying to "score points" for the next election

Isn't that what the presidency has really always been about? Power, more power, and of course lots and lots of money.

Congress (both parties are guilty) has given it power away because our legislators lack the courage to make the hard decisions that they are paid to make.
