The thing is, you're not 'giving my child happiness', you're giving my kid a drug that makes him/her feel a pleasant sensation for a little while, in conjunction with a physical and mental lethargy, the possibility of respiratory depression and a heart beat that slows until it stops, depending on the age of my child and his/her stage of development it could hinder growth of adult brain cells, cause phlebotomical diseases and possible death from overdose or indirectly like from a diseased injection site, or being put at risk by association with drug dealers and dangerous characters. So no, I don't think I see the ultimate good - ie the 1.5 hrs of feeling nice until the drug is metabolized - as counteracting the risks involved. I wouldn't blame you entirely because it would be my son/daughter's bad decision more than yours, but I definitely wouldn't feel happy about it and would strive to sever the ties and remove my child from this situation. Heroin doesn't make you happy. Heroin makes your body feel good for a couple hours. It doesn't even make you feel emotionally happy like mdma, it just makes you feel sluggish and heavy, and obsessed with the euphoric sensation your body is feeling. If you're sad when you do heroin, you're just as sad when you're done. It's not a lasting effect. If heroin were a legitimately anti-depressing drug, and my child was depressed, and we discussed it and made an informed decision that the pros outweighed the cons, than I could justify it and would even help him/her obtain it and use it safely - I am not categorically unwilling to entertain the hypothetical just because of legality. But heroin doesn't make you happy. And even if it makes you feel pretty good in the short term, the creation of a this need for more heroin in an individual means that you can never truly feel satisfied or secure, because even if you have loads of heroin it's still not going to last you forever. I would far rather my child become addicted to a synthetic heroin like oxycontin, because at least then we could be sure of the quality and potency of the stuff, and it's not some unknowable quantity. And I also wouldn't describe heroin addiction as 'a goal to succeed'. That made me chuckle. Heroin addiction prevents you from having larger goals, because all your money and aspirations are channeled through this obsession. You can't save up money as an addict, it all needs to go toward your drugs. Your personal relationships fall to the wayside. When you need drugs, they become the most important things in your life. I know that trying heroin once doesn't mean you become an addict, but I'm entertaining your thought experiment. If I want what's best for my kid, and I want my kid to be happy, than the last thing I'd want would be for him/her to start using heroin. But depending on the age of the kid in question (18+?) there's really nothing I can do either way about it.
