We have a bunch of brilliant people who enjoy studying the stars. They really like proving, or disproving the existing theories. The problem is that just about all of this is just that, theories, ideas of how something might have happened. History shows that this study has been going on since recorded time, and I am sure before. There is no way to truely prove or disprove something that happened millions, or billions of yoers ago.
Look back in time. People used to think that the world was flat. People used to believe that everything revolved around earth. All of these things are presented as fact until someone finds something that doesn't fit the existing theory, then they come up with a new one. I am sure this will continue for the rest of mankind and maybe when we get to meet our maker we will know the real truth.pp

By determining the age of the craters we can also calculate the cratering rate and see how it has varied over time. This lets us know the makeup of small bodies in the SS and potentially their source through computer modelling. (ie we know if there were X number of craters caused in a certain period and modelling shows that X-Y bodies were all that could exist in the inner solar system then Y bodies must have come from the outer solar system (ie Comets)

Simple answer is that craters are made by impact of meteors.
Meteors are basically chuinks of far away planets or systems that have escaped their gravitational pull.
By finding these chunks of material we can get an idea of elemental composition of other systems/planets in space.

There are big rocks out in space that sometime REALLY ruin your day!
Actually by looking at the moon we get an idea about how many times the EARTH has been hit by a BIG meteor------- our surface would look just like the moon's EXCEPT for our atmosphere which erodes the surface with wind and rain------ and plate tectonics which moves continents ---- bangs them together, raises up mountain ranges, and eventually eats it all and recycles it.
