I'm about halfway through writing a book... (152 some pages in)... And along comes new ideas that seem pretty cool... but I don't want to drop the project I'm writing and I wonder what I should do?

Keep writing or follow new ideas?

When I said new ideas... I mean new ideas for new stories not relating to the current story in progress.

If the new ideas can be easily implanted into your story - without creating a choppy structure and it seems to fit your story - then sure, why not follow the new ideas.

However, if you already have the beginning, middle, and end planned out for the story you are currently writing - then just keep writing.

Grab a journal and write down your new ideas to come back to in the future.

You could jot down those ideas or even start this other story while you are "taking a break" from your current story. I am a part of a writing group where the others tell me all the time "Never discard your ideas. Always write them down so you can expand on them at a later time."

Sad thing is, I haven't taken their advice yet. My problem is I feel the story isn't GOOD enough! :P Congrats to you and 152 pages though. That's great!

Good luck and have a great day.

Write two things at once. Don't drop the one that your writing now, just because you have another idea!!!! You can keep writing your book, but in your spare time, you can start on the new ideas, just so you won't be on one story and get bored. That's how I write, by writing serveral things at once so I'm not just concentrated on one at a time. Keeps your interest more. You could even try to combine the new ideas with the old story, making a crazy twist in your book!
Good luck!

And don't give up!

Write from your heart.
Write what you feel.
Write yourself.

I have a ceramic Jar On my desk that says My Ideas-in It I slip little cards (cut paper) with all the new story ideas written on them - I put the idea, any characters I have in mind for it and any other tidbits I can think of; if i come up with anything new I just jot it on the card at any time....
Then when I am done with one I am working on I will pull out one of those cards and start a whole new story...Also I got it at one of those Paint your Own Ceramic shops and it is painted in a way that totally shows my creativity so I get inspired by just looking at it...
This idea has helped me stay focused on the one story I am working on right now and not get side tracked...yay me (my biggest obstacle to writing success) SO this you might try--you don't have to even have a fancy one just an old pasta sauce bottle will do!

You spend a couple of hours developing that new idea with enough detail that you can recall it later--and get back to the work in progress.

If you allow yourself to be distracted by a new story, you'll never get anything finished. So file it and get back to work. When you finish the work in progress, you can lay out all those wonderful ideas you had and choose your next plot.

First of all, start talking like an author. Always refer to the length of your work in the number of words, not pages. Secondly this is only your first draft. You will have to go through several before it is in presentable condition, so ideas may be added to other drafts. That is the way it works. That is one of the reasons for drafts. They give you the opportunity to expand and expound.

keep on writing while injecting your brand new ideas!
but if it doesn't work, why not try putting your new ideas in another book? or in a short story if it's not that ambitious.
no one said that writing was an easy endeavor, after all.

good luck to you!

Jot them down so you don't forget them, then finish your work in progress.

I feel your pain -- I have almost 2 dozen books in the works, and plenty of ideas still coming to me. LOL
