Is it illegal to buy these products with the intent of personal use, rather than trying to sell it as the real deal.

Conterfeit products must not be bought considering that the buyer is patronizing an illegal product.

It's unethical, for sure. As for legality, I would think that might depend in part on where you live. Some countries might have strict laws about posession of counterfeit items, others might only have laws against producing and selling them.

Be careful with counterfeit items no matter what the legality is. Most are of very poor quality, and some could be downright dangerous. I have heard of counterfeit car parts causing accidents and counterfeit cell phone batteries exploding in peoples' faces.
