Just wondering. I've heard of women becoming pregnant with sextuplets or quintuplets, but the ones I've heard of had used fertility treatments because they were unable to get pregnant (ie Kate from the TV show "John & Kate Plus 8"). But is it possible to release 5+ eggs at once naturally, with no use of fertility treatments?

Actually you can google my 6th cousins and get your answer. The Dionne Quints. I IS possible but they were identical so 5 eggs weren't released, the egg split 5 times.

Yes, but it is very rare. For sextuplets, chances are 1 in about 2 billion (prior to the 1980s, these children would not have survived). Quintuplets were something like 1 in 300 million, but possibly a little more often. Again, it's not like these pregnancies didn't occur before, but the children never lived. In fact, even today, most pregnancies that start out as sextuplet or quintuplet pregnancies have several or all losses. In every case that I know of (naturally occurring quints or sextuplets), the mother was over 38 (and maybe even over 40).

Natural born quads are much more common (as above poster indicated, 1 in 13 million). I'm related to a natural set of quads born in 1950. Mom was almost 39 when they were born (she already had 6 kids, mind you).

It is is extremely rare. Even triplets were a rarity before fertility drugs came on the market. Higher order multiple births were almost non-existent before fertility treatments like Clomid, Pergonal, and IVF became available. That is why the Dionne quintuplets became such a sensation in the 1950s--it was such a rarity that the public was fascinated by the idea. Now quintuplets are no big deal, media-wise.
