Where did the term 'walking on pins and needles' originate, as well as other like psychology cliches?

When you wake up of a morning or keep a leg or foot or hand in one position to long and it goes to sleep it feels like someone is sticking pins and needles in that area, I awake a lot of mornings with my hands asleep because of artheritis, it feels like a million pins are in my hand as the blood starts to flow back in. I am assuming thats where it comes from.
