Freedom of the Press means that you can voice pleasure or discontent for anything, or anybody without fear of going to jail. All of this has to be within reason though. You can't yell fire in a crowded theater and creat a potential for people getting hurt, also you cannot spread rummors that could hurt someone or their ability to make a living. Another way of putting it is that your freedom ends at the end of my nose.
There are a lot of countries that don't allow you to talk out about the government without being punished of killed.pp

Because if reporters and other people can't write about what's going on in the world and have it published for just about everyone to read, we won't know what's happening. Freedom of the press is an idea for mass communication, it's to get everyone invloved and have them know what's happening out in the world, where upon the people may form opinions and ideas. Not only that, but freedom of the press gives the right for people to express themselves in writing and such.

Freedom of the press is important because the press is suppose to be a neutral party showing both side of the story. However, as much of America, the press have taken things too far and has become a spokesman for the left wingers.

Its very important that we be able to speak our minds in regards to our government. If we ever allow our freedom of speech to be taken away, the entire nation will fall. Although, people should understand that their are times when you should not have the freedom to say what ever you want. Such as, walking into a movie theater and yelling fire. That could cause a panic that would jeopardize the safety of the public. I also believe that criticism of our government should be kept respectful during times of war. A person should still be able to speak their mind, but it should be done tactfully, unlike that of some of the anti-war protesters lately.

In a lot of countries freedom of press is not an option or illegal. In America, people can print their thoughts without getting criticized.

If the government controls the press, than the people have no way of knowing what the government is up to. A free press can tell people if their leaders are doing something illegal or immoral, so something can be done about it.

It is not that there is an explicit freedom of the press, but that we are all free to communicate as we wish with very few restrictions.
Sometimes that is accomplished by organizing into news publishers who seek out information, and hence are free to publish it as they see fit.
Read the 1st Amendment for yourself and cherish it.

freedom of the press prevents the government from telling the people the information it wants the people to know. in the united kingdom the BBC is the government controlled press. with the first ammendment the government CANNOT tell you what you can and can't say about it. this is especially crucial during times like now or Bush would have had reporters arrested for writing articles against the invasion and Hillary would have them shot for calling her on her flip flopping. freedom of the press gives the people a voice to address wrongs like people falsley accused of crimes, of churches abusing kids, of bankers robbing their depositers. it exposes organized crime and gets people to participate to change their neighborhoods. freedom of the press is why we can say our politicians suck without having to worry about them dragging us from our homes in the dead of night like they do in russia and cuba.
