I've heard cases where women (psycologically I assume) can have symptoms of pregnancy, like lactating, even though they are not pregnant. So, can the same happen with producing the pregnancy hormone (hCG) even if one is not pregnant?

False positives are extremely rare, and are usually the result of other medical disorders such as the following:

Cervical cancer
Colon cancer
Breast cancer
Lung cancer
Nephrotic kidney disease
Tubal or ovarian abcesses
presence of anti-mouse antibodies (HAMA)

The first two on the list are the most common causes.

This is why when you have a positive urine test, the doctors will pretty much always do a quantitative blood test to confirm the levels, and do a pelvic exam to feel the pregnancy.

Getting a false positive because you have cancer is a very very very rare occurance.

In very rare cases, the preganacy hormone can show up when the woman is not actually pregnant. It's called a false pregnancy and aeven though it's mostly in the mind, the body responds by producing HcG and causes the stomach to swell as well as other common pregnancy symptoms. Sometimes women in menopause produce very low levels also. I don't know why that happens, but it does. My mother had a false pregnancy when I was 12, and even though she wasn't and hadn't been pregnant, the hormone still appeared. but like I said it's rare.

I do, I have had 2 "pregnancy" blood test that came back positive but when I go in for the ultra sound there is nothing and everything looks normal... It is possible to produce hCG without being pregnant... it is a chemical produced by you body in other ways but typically has to do with female issues... still no idea why I am producing it

I hear that really rare cases some cysts can produce the HCG hormone or some women can get positive HTP when they are ovulating (but would last only like for day). The case of the cyst is so rare, I doubt it. Maybe you are pregnant but under some unusual circumstances. Some women get pregnant with the pill, Some other women get their cycles fo the first few months of pregnancy (very rare- but it happens) or some women get pregnant naturally after years of fertility issues.

Levels of hCG in pregnancy

Human Chorionic Ganadotropin (hCG) is a hormone that can be detected in the urine and blood of humans. This hormone increases during pregnancy so it is common to measure the rise in level using Home Pregnancy Tests ( or HPTs, which measure hCG levels in the urine) or a hCG Beta test (which measures hCG levels in the blood serum). The hCG Beta is much more sensitive then the Home Pregnancy Test and you can usually get a positive result much earlier with a blood test than with the HPTs.
Usually the reference values for hCG Beta are as follows:

Men: less than 5.0 mIU/ml - Normal

Women: Non -pregnant - less than 5.0 mIU/ml - Negative/normal

*Borderline - Between 5.0 to 25.0 mIU/ml (you could be pregnant)

*Positive - Higher than 25.0 mIU/ml

Yes, I had some HCG when I had a positive pregnancy test and the blood test confirmed that I wasn't pregnant. It was only a 5.

This question scares me because I'm trying to get pregnant, and on March 4th the day my period should've started, I went to the hospital for chest pains and they wanted a chest xray so I told them I might be pregnant. They did the urine it came back high then they did the blood test that came back low at a 45. they said I could be a normal pregnancy or a chemical one or a transient, which is freaking me out Because I really want to be pregnant. So I hope you are to if that what you desire. As well as I hope i am.

the only way a woman can produce hcg is from a placenta. Therefor if there is no placenta present than there shouldn't be any hcg hormone. Meaning if you are not pregnant than you will not detect this hormone. Now sometimes if you have recently given birth or you have recently miscarried than you can still show this hormone but in fact not be pregnant.
Hope this helped!! JAT

That isn't true. You only starts producing HCG when you are pregnant. Your body starts making it a week after conception. The only way it would show up as a BFP on a test is if there is a trace of HCG in your system which is being made because you either were pregnant and miscarried or ARE pregnant. Good luck!
