I think it's so sad that they do. This is my own humble opinion only, but I think that one thing that it might be is some sort of "mob mentality". Part of mob mentality is a subconscious desire to protect the group as a whole. Those different from what you consider to be your own particular group, or those who rebel against the group are considered to be a potential threat to the group as a whole.

That's a really good question. I have often wondered this myself. Human beings are so vicious and cruel to each other over differences because of fear and biases.
