did you learn from your siblings/friends or did you get lessons?

I tried it several times in 1997 and 1998 and liked it. Then my kids wanted to learn in 1999, so I volunteered to be a snowboard instructor and the non-profit organization near me that teaches kids to ski and snowboard taught me how to ride and how to teach - been riding ever since.

Doing it as a volunteer saves some money and we are helping kids that normally would never get the chance to learn. This year, my oldest (14) is going to be a junior instructor (yes, he is better than me in the park but I can still hold my own on the hill).

Good Luck

I was at a sales meeting and had decided before I went there, that it was going to be the year for me to start learning. I went with the distributor from Japan for lessons. I took two lessons. I was seriously black and blue from head to toe when I was done and could barely sit through the meetings I hurt so badly. I was just shy of my 38th birthday. It was on Mt. Rainier at Crystal Mountain resort. That was 7 years ago. I have never regretted learning to snowboard. It is so much fun. I now snowboard 50-60 days/nights per season.

I have never had a lesson.

I started snowboarding because my boyfriend was always at the mountain and I wanted to spend more time with him.

I never thought I would fall in love with it. Soon I was going more than him, reading every snowboard mag from cover to cover, and watching snowboard movies over and over.

At least one good thing came out of that relationship. Hehe, just kidding.

It was tough learning from him and his buddies, especially since I was the only girl. But having to keep up with them got me to where I am today. It wasn't without pain though. I have broken bones, gotten more than my share of concussions, and even ended my first day ever with a black eye.

And I don't regret a minute of it.

the first time ever was with an instructor, but after that the only times i had instructors was when i go to camp with school.
otherwise, i would have probably needed instructors but my friends (well actually my cousin and his friends) were awesome and beared with me and helped me out even though i was just like a snotty ten year old and they were already, like pros.
and i think it was good that i had so many guys around me. it toughened me up, as i realized when i went with some female friends that had actually been snowboarding longer than me but wanted to stop and rest every three minutes, and made a huge deal out of a small fall. and i just learned to laugh and get back up whenever i fell down, and to snowboard the whole day only stopping for ten minutes to shove some food down my throat. and i'm glad it ended up being that way, cuz now i can ride with practically anyone.

I got lessons, I would recommend them, friends dont help much on the mountain from what i've experienced. I learned at age 13 in middle school since we had a ski club which was the best when I got the hang of snowboarding.

Good Luck

How i learned is first, i took a friend with me. A friend that has the same personality, same stuff taht i like, etc. He never has gone snowboarding so we both started as beginners. Everytime we go snowboarding, we bring each other. Now you have a friend to go with, and you stay at the same level/hill with them!
