I recently went to Firestone to get my front break pads and rotors replaced.. $250! They said that they were 75%-90% worn. The next day, I'm driving to and from work.. and they feel EXACTLY the same! I felt no difference when I had to break. I took it back over to Firestone and they claim that something was loose, they "fixed" it, but I still feel no difference. Does anyone know of anyone who will give me a second opinion - free break inspection?

It's possible that they replaced everything. Replacement of pads and rotors will not affect the way the brakes feel.

If you want to be sure that they replaced what they said, most service stations do offer a free brake inspection. Simply call and ask. I believe Midas does offer free brake inspections. (At least they did at some point)

If the brakes feel spongy, then there is either air in the lines and the brakes need to be bleed, there's a brake fluid leak somewhere, or you have a bad master cylinder. I'd be more worried if they told me something was "loose" and they fixed it for a brake job. I'd be questioning what was loose and what they forgot to tighten?.

However performing a brake job typically will not cause you brakes to feel any different (nor should it) than they felt before you brought the car in.

Free Brake Inspection Firestone

Firestone has a 55% markup over Autozone price. As far as labor goes, they are around 70 an hour. Bleeding the brakes is not always included in the labor with a master cylinder. Firestone uses Mitchell On Demand for labor which does NOT include bleeding brakes in the R&R for the master cylinder. It appears they didn't price you a bleeding. It appears they quoted you a brake flush along with a brake service that lubricates the hardware on your brakes and cleans it if necessary. The reason they quoted you a brake flush is due to the failure of the master cylinder, which is usually caused by sludge building up in the fluid and settling as black goop in the bottom of the reservoir. if the goop is there, it is throughout the brake system. Most master cylinders R&R in Mitchell can be anywhere from .8 to 2 hours depending on the vehicle. If you haven't paid their price, then no you aren't getting ripped off. If you have paid their price, check the pricing with their competitors. You may be surprised to find Firestone fairly priced at market value with Pepboys and Midas. If you can get a master cylinder for 70 bucks get one. Take it down to Earl Under The Tree. Let him put it on for 20 bucks and a case of beer. When it fails next week, try to find him. Firestone will be right where you left them.

I suggest you take it to the dealership. Yeah, I know.... Big Bucks... but look at it this way... you will probably need a new window regulator, the part with the cables in it. They may or may not have it it stock, but they will have access to it with a lesser delay than Firestone. The mechanics at the dealership only work on your brand of car, so they have the expertise to fix it right the first time. Time is money... Where do you think Firestone is going to get the part? They will call the dealer, order the part, and when it arrives, they will mark it up to make their profit on it and you will end up paying more for the part than at the dealer. I balk at the word Firestone... regardless what it's attached to. (Remember the old Firestone jingle??? "Where the rubber meets the road".... ? I have blown more Firestone tires on a truck than any other brand. I think that's where the jingle came from ... all that rubber laying on the road.) :-}

I have 2 or 3 Westmoreland Tire Co. in my area and they check my brakes for free.

Also in correction to the previous answerers if they replace everything then you will too feel a difference in the way the vehicle stops.

1. Ok let's say your rotors are warped and the brakes squeak.

2. With these problems when you press the brakes the vehicle should start shaking and start to make a squeaking sound.

3. The only way to fix a warped rotor is to replace it.

4. The only way to fix squeaking brakes is to replace the brake pads.

5. If you replace both of these then the vehicle should stop like it normally would without any noise or any shaking.

So yes you can feel a difference depending on what is done to the vehicle.
Also $250 is usually at the high end of the price range. I'm fixing to work on my brakes myself and mine will be $250 just for parts. I will be replacing both the brake pads and rotors.

Just take it to another tire shop. They should give brake inspections for free no matter who they are.

Hope this helps!

I would not take anything to Goodyear. They are the biggest crooks , at least the one by where I live. 25 bucks to fix a flat tire and 3 dollars for a valve stem.
