undergrad school for four years
medical school for four years
at this point you are technically an MD, but cannot practice independently until a seven year internship (approximately) is completed.
additionally, a fellowship also increases experience and prestige.

so fifteen years.

4 years of undergrad study
4 years of medical school
3 years of residency- which includes assisting in operations
7 years of fellowship- conducting your own surgeries
