DVR is just a type of system. It isn't a brand? Up until 5 minutes ago, I thought it was a competitor of Tivo, lol.

I am doing a consumer report, and am deciding to compare these 3 models of DVR: Tivo, Replaytv, and Topfield

I am correct that these are 3 models of DVR, right?

A DVR, also sometimes called a PVR (programmable video recorder) contains a hard disk drive, just like your PC. Just like your TV or VCR, it has a tuner (or two in dual-tuner units) to allow it to record content off of one or two TV channels. The programs are recorded in compressed form to allow greater recording time capacity. The recorded programs are decompressed when you play them back. Since recording and playback are independent functions, DVRs allow you to pause the video stream being recorded and restart it later, or even rewind it and redisplay it, like instant-replay.

TiVo is one brand of DVR. It has a particularly easy interface, but also has a monthly subscription rate of somewhere between $9 and $15, depending on service plan. Pretty much all the cable and satellite companies also have their own DVRs. They charge considerably less per month (around $5 or $6 I believe), but reputedly, their user-interface is not as good as TiVo.

DVR stands for digital video recorder, and is the generic term for Tivo, ReplayTV, etc. However, many people refer to any sort of DVR as a Tivo just as they refer to any brand of facial tissue as a kleenex.
