A great look at Franklin D. Roosevelt is shown in the TV-movie "Warm Springs" (also out on DVD.) For a more complete picture, there is a dramatic mini-series "Eleanor and Franklin".
Most importantly, Franklin was an only child, adored and dominated by his Mother until her death. She had a view of his destiny, and saw him becoming a great man.
