Write down all the things you can think of about a "stereotype," such as something large, or scary (or whimsical). Then, write down all the attributes (good and bad) about that kind of creature. That might help you get started--then just create a story of what the creature is doing (and give it a name).

It would be interesting to create a creature with the mental capacity of a human, but the actual instincts of a bear/wolf/other hunting mammal. So your creature would be brilliant and capable of advanced thought, yet with a clear cut sense of social hierarchy and structure. The opposite of the average human's capitalistic mindset. Even a human crossed with a bee or an ant or some other socially structured insect would make for an interesting creature. It might be good to pick a theme like literature or food and go from there- if pizza were an animal, what would it be? Slow like a sloth, fat like a manatee, yet with a really fast gestation time like a rabbit? Would it have interchangeable appendages like toppings? Would it attract its mate with a glorious scent, yet inevitably impregnate that mate with 5 extra pounds and the urge to sleep? LOL Sounds like a fun project!

How about a metamorphic creature. Like a frog or salamandor that can live on land and in water. Maybe have it have fur though, and six legs instead of four. :-)
Just play around with it. It could be fun.
Oh! And it needs a bill like a platypus (sp?). If you're still stumped, watch some animated movies. They have weird creatures sometimes and can inspire you.

I'll create it. What's the assigment? You just have to create a mythological creature? Okay, how 'bout, a "lampixiline", it's a lampyrida (firefly), pixie, and feline. A little light-up flying kitten. I just made it up, just now. All yours, sport!
(seriously though, I can help you more if you want... anymore details about the assignment?)

Think of your favorite stories that you liked, enjoyed growing up. Like the monster in the closet, the monster under the bed, the little people that live in the walls that steal our one socks, etc. Usually thinking as a child (elementary fears) helps.
