Its all about the brain.
We all do things to avoid pain and gain pleasure, pleasure is a brain thing, measured by the release of neurotransmitters.
Any addiction is a brain thing, where the person links a behavior or stimulus to the release of the feel good neurotransmitters in the Central Nervous System. If they cannot see any harm or negative effects to their actions then they are heading toward an addiction. The brain literally craves the release of the things that releases the feel good chemistry.
So what that got to do with masturbation? Heaps. First up sex is pleasurable, its designed that way, its a blessing to humans, and all creatures too. Masturbation taps into the powerful feel good chemistry without then need to be in relation with another person ( which as we all know is time consuming risky and often painful ).
Guys also are very visually stimulated, more so than most women. The world we live in, is filled with sexy images designed to sell products, but the side effect of living in a flesh driven market is that guys are constantly being stimulated and need to finish off what was started earlier.
Some guys become caught in an addictive cycle, an cannot stop masturbating, they have rewired their brain to highly value the process of masturbation over pursuing real and satisfying relationships with real people. Almost impossible to stop. Though there is a fast cure.

but i'm guessing for pretty much the same reasons women masturbate!
