The North carries more of the remnants of the Austrian occupation of the country--much of the cuisine and some customs come from Germanic influence. Prior poster is right, the north is wealthier and has most of the industry in the country. They also have the lowest birth rate in a developed region! The north has excellent universities. Most of the northern part is alp country. Venice was one of the wealthiest cities in the world, due to sea dominance; southern Italy never reached anything close (and Sicily was reconquered many, many times).

The south is more agricultural and is considered much poorer than the north, although they are politically important. Sicily also is considered a different area. There are more growing regions (except for the wine regions in Emilio-Romagna in the north) but the soil is much less rich than in the north (north of Rome).

The north is the wealthier part of Italy, the south is somewhat rural and is considered economically poorer.
