I had 5 of those pastry things with feta cheese inside them. I didn't realise that you are not meant to eat feta cheese when pregnant. Will it harm my baby?

I personally think people go overboard with not eating anything that tastes good during pregnancy, lol. I think you'll be fine. Don't stress over it.

Feta Cheese Pregnant

Don't freak out. You are not supposed to eat feta due to a risk of listeria, which is actually very rare. Also you can eat feta if it is pasteurized, do you know if the feta you ate was? There is nothing you can do about it now and it is very unlikely that it did any harm to your baby. You freaking out and getting stressed out will do more damage. Just stay calm and contact your Dr. if you are really worried.

good luck!

You'll be fine. While the foods mentioned in the post above are at a higher risk for listeria, the fact remains that still less than 2500 people per year (non-pregnant included) ever contract listeria. It's very very rare.

Ask your doctor about the real potential risks for these kinds of "taboo" foods during pregnancy, because many of them are a bit exaggerated and people can really become alarmists about this kind of thing. Most of the time heating these foods through makes them safe to eat.

Good luck!

I was told to avoid soft cheese like feta, but I doubt eating it once will hurt your baby!

From my understanding all domestically made cheeses (those made in the US) have to be pasteurized or made from pasteurized ingredients. So unless it was from imported cheese, you should be okay. On your next trip to the grocery store, look at the feta, most if not all say pasteurized on the label.

The soft cheese made in the US are usually okay because they are made from pasteurized milk (pasteurization kills the Listeria organism.) Imported soft cheeses are usually best to avoid. Here is a short list of soft cheeses to avoid:
feta (goat cheese)
brie
Camembert
blue-veined cheeses, like Roquefort
Here is a list of meats, poultry and fish to avoid while pregnant:
Hot dogs
Sausages
Deli meat
Under cooked meat like beef and chicken
Pates
Ready to eat cold seafood
Raw eggs and raw egg dishes
Raw seafood, especially shellfish

Best of luck to you and your baby.♥

Soft, unpasteurized cheeses like feta, Brie, Camembert, and goat — as well as ready-to-eat meats like hot dogs and deli meats — may contain Listeria, bacteria that cause mild flu-like symptoms in most adults but can be very dangerous for unborn babies. Listeriosis, the infection caused by the bacteria, can cause miscarriage, premature birth, or severe illness or death of a newborn.

most feta cheese that you will get in restaurants and in stores is pasteurized--so it is OK. you should not eat unpasteurized, soft cheeses. i am sure you are fine. i eat feta at least once a week.

feta should be avoided due to certain bacteria that can be in it. the odds of getting this bacteria are small, but most women choose to avoid the foods that may carry them anyway. this is the same with things such as deli meats and bagged salads. your risk of eating them and getting sick as a result is no higher than a normal person eating them and getting sick, it is just that if you are unfortunate enough to get sick, your baby may also pay a penalty. the pastries will probably not harm you, but in the future to try to avoid them if possible.

You should be fine. It's only because there are some bacteria that COULD be preasent in unpasturized cheese, but you'd know because you'd get sick also. That's just like when they tell you not to eat uncooked cookie dough when your little because of the raw eggs but I never listened to that and I'm just fine, lol.
