PS2 fighting game with a seriously deep storyline?

Question

I'm looking for a game that is primarily based on fighting and combat, like in a ring or something like that. Like tekken only with more of a storyline. My usual interests are rpg's but they generally lack in the hand to hand combat. I like cutscenes and the good guy with an honorable cause(but cloudy pasts are a plus). And like I said, it must have a good storyline(i don't mind if you can only be a single guy with no selection, in fact i think i prefer to have a main caracter rather then 20 people to choose from) and not just a brawling game but have a reason to to be fighting. And one more thing; I don't want it to be based on any sport(like boxing or wrestling) but be more open and interesting

If you like hand-to-hand combat and RPGs, I recommend playing some action RPGs (not turn-based). A great action RPG with a good story is Star Ocean - Till the End of Time. The battle system is really fun. Dark Cloud 2 is another good choice.

As far as I know, Mortal Kombat: Deception has a mode called "Konquest" where you play through a more "RPG-ish" adventure. Supposedly, while you walk around and talk to people, the fights in that game are played out the same as if you were playing Arcade Mode.

I'm not entirely sure about the level of customization or choice in characters, nor am I sure that it's possible to "level up". It's simply the only game that I've heard of that sounds like that.

To be honest, most people that enjoy "pick up and put down", multi-player games like fighting games, tend to prefer keeping that style of play, away from from the "sit and play for long involved sessions", single-player type of game play.

Other than that, I could possibly recommend a game like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, or X-Men: Legends 1/2, which offer more character building (in terms of abilities), but more of a "top down" view for it's frantic "beat-em-up" action.

I would say Sly 3: Honor among thieves. But maybe dont spend anything and get an Xbox 360 and get Assasins Creed. That game looks awesome.
