can you not read? i asked if the UK is a failing society?
given the UK's vast wealth and yet growing inequality and shocking child poverty, i would say the UK is failing and could do a LOT better

you think the Uk is failing. You're Bobby Fisher at a chess game compared to us (USA), The economy of the state of California (if it were a country and not a state) would be 7th in the world and this country doesn't have money for National Healthcare and it never will. Luckily for all the rich ba***rds in the USA, they don't care, there is no social price of any kind to be paid for it. I laugh my head off every time a commercial comes on with a little girl saying "cm-on we're going to look pretty silly if we don't do something about healthcare? Dubya said we don' t have enough money to pay for kids without healthcare. So on the human poverty index, UK if you're 20th , we're 40th and most people here wouldn't care if we were last.

Well ,according to governments Britain has the best this and that in the world. Trouble is they let people travel and pretty soon UK citizens ( the brighter ones ) realize it's all a pack of lies, like the much touted fact that we are fifth richest country in world. We are not. Many things are penny pinched so GB can 'punch above it's weight in the world ' . What a load of tosh. Government doesn't care about it's people. Wake up and realise this.

there is a definite downward trend in the UK towards the poverty break line, the reason as I see it is. UK government want to world to see we are, all things to all men,
That is having a dramatic effect of the poorest of our citizens.
It has always puzzled me that our government can remove third world debts and yet, allow our own people, to lose their homes through that very same problem, what is the logic of that?it is time for a re-think and understand that charity, Begins At Home

What is your point considering most of the world's so called poor people are over here on hand out's in the first place, I believe in the old but true story that you do your garden first before you help someone else, and garden is in so much mess, If you live in a house. flat, tent whatever good luck to you, if on the other hand you are looking for rent through a council, you have no chance because all these so called poor people are over here clogging everything up

I think the UK is anything but a failing nation,it certainly does have issues such as high debt and lots of anti social behaviour problems, but compared to many parts of Spain believe me its wealthy, and I agree with you we could all do better dealing with povety all over the world.

To call UK citizens poor is an insult to the really poor people of the Third world. People who are starving and don't have enough clothes or any shelter. Mothers who cannot feed their babies because their milk has dried up. That is poverty.
I don't see children in rags with no shoes. I don't see walking skeletons on the streets of Britain (except the anorexic variety). I don't see people who have no clean water to drink.
Stop whinging about poverty in the UK, and do something to help those elsewhere who are in a state of real and terrible need.

don't think that this survey tells us much
as for poverty - some people put themselves into poverty by having numerous children when living on benefits
i often hear the mantra - I'm better off at home than getting a low paid job....
