A heater is a good idea for these - it will help to keep the temperature consistent.

If you're only getting males, you could easily keep 20-30 fish with good filtration. I'm not setting a definite number because it would make a difference if the tank is a 20 long or a 20 tall - the longer tank has more surface area for oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange at the surface, and this allows you to keep more fish. If you want males and females, I would only get about 10 total and let them fill the tank with their fry.

Platys are omnivores and will eat just about anything small enough for them. Use a good flake food as the main part of their diet, and add frozen blood worms, daphnia, live mosquito larvae and some veggies (a piece of romaine lettuce, zucchini, cucumber) on a clip that hangs on the side of the tank: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/207678/product.web so the fish can take a bite and pull it off the rest of the piece.
