I prefer Sophie to top-ten Sophia, though the difference is admittedly subtle. Just slightly more refreshing and it's always had a "softer" sound to my ear. Not quite sure how to best explain that, but hopefully you understand. ;)
Mia is a fine, equally-popular choice, but I personally only like it as a nickname for something more formal. Especially after seeing so many parents use it as a play on words, so to speak. Naming the child "Bella Mia," for instance, just so they can mentally cackle "My pretty!" every time the name is said. LOL Things of that nature.
I prefer Mia as a nickname for Amelia, Emilia, Emelina, Matilda, Marina, Maria, etc. There are plenty of options out there that won't be akin to naming the child "my," after all. ;)
Edit: Thought I'd mentioned this, but my other aversion to Mia as a given name is that I immediately think "Missing in Action" every time I see it, this being the common abbreviation for soldiers lost in battle. Seeing someone "shout" it in all caps above reminded me. LOL

I like Sophia or Sophie much better than Mia. I also like Savanah, Andrea, Riley, Ruthie, Charlotte (a favorite!) Jill, Caterina, Sarafina, and Carina. Good luck and congratulations on the baby.

Since my daughter is Sophia and we call her Sophie most of the time, you know which one I prefer!! I absolutely love it. I think it is so feminine and strong, and I like that it means wisdom.

I love Mia. My nickname (grandma name)...is MiMi. I've always kind of secretly hoped that if my son ever has a girl they will name her Mia ... but I would never suggest that .. .they can name their children whatever they want.
