Because the United States complies with international treaties and the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) which places marijuana under Schedule I.

The drugs in Schedule I of the CSA have a high potential of abuse; a high potential of addiction (medical); and no medical use.

Before you go into the marijuana is used medically for this and that....there is a synthetic THC currently in use called Marinol. You just don't get to "puff puff...pass."

Taxes have no bearing on the legality either. If you were to put the high taxes on marijuana as some think...you'd foster blackmarket activities!

My usual answer is because the ones who are are too stoned to get organized politically, even after 70 years. Getting organized would mean not being stoned, at least for as long as it takes to repeal the laws, and apparently the status quo is preferable to that.

And I am generally sympathetic to legalization, but I don't use, so I have no incentive to organize if the actual users can't get it together themselves.

So the real answer is not that others are against you, it is that you as a group can't persuade people to support you in your current frequently stoned state.

Sorry, that is probably not the answer you want, and someone else is going to ask in 10 minutes, so I have to go now :)

Sorry Pfo, marijuana is NOT a narcotic. Narcotic is a term that is used too broadly to decribe illegal drugs. As to why marijuana is not legal, there are probably many reasons. Alot of people say it's because the government can't make money off of it, but I don't agree 100%. Nonetheless, it shouldn't be legal because it'd be just one more thing that destroyed people's lives. It kills brain cells and makes you stupid. That's reason enough.

Ignorance fear and superstition.

"There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others."

"...the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races."

"Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death."

"Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men."

"Marijuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing"

"You smoke a joint and you're likely to kill your brother."

"Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind."

Harry J. Anslinger

Harry J. Anslinger was the man behind the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. Which was only meant to place a tax on the stuff. Catch 22 here. In order for a grower to get the tax stamps you had to produce the pot... once you did you got busted for having the pot without the tax stamps. Of course the Feds had no intention of ever issuing any stamps.

EDIT: By the way scheduling of controlled substances was the brain child of J. Edgar Hoover. Bypassing the congressional process to outlaw a substance made it easier for the Nixon Administration to jail Viet Nam War protesters.

Because a maority of voters don't want it that way.

If 60 or 70% of American voters wanted it done, it'd get done.
