Avoid eating the molded rye
Scientist now have a theory about the causes for the Salem witch trials. There is a fungus that grows on rye when there is an unusually wet growing season. This black fungus will still be present when one makes bread with it. It causes hallucinations and sometimes death.

By whom?
To avoid witch trials, all the authorities had to do was "kill" anyone suspected of witchcraft without a trial.
Or, they could have simply ignored accusations of witchcraft, but that was not a feasible alternative in that era.
To avoid being treated as a witch was not so easy, since many accused witches were simply innocent victims of greedy men who wanted to steal their land and wealth.

Well... If man did not distort the teachings of God, many things in history would be different. Man is an emotional and volatile creature, who is governed by his own greed and seeks his own advancement. As unfortunate as it is, man can take something that is meant to instruct (IE the Bible in this case) and distort the teachings to fit their own ambitions. The only way to avoid the Witch Trials, and things along the same line, would be to change the very nature of man.
Cheers

There were no ways. You can step on someone's foot and be called a witch. Just because, no one was safe.
