At 29,029ft (8,848m) Everest is the highest mountain in the world, but measured from top to bottom, below sea level, Mauna Kea beats Everest by 4436 ft. (over 3/4 of a mile).

Although Mount Everest, at 29,029 feet tall, is often called the tallest mountain; Mauna Kea, an inactive volcano on the island of Hawaii is actually taller. Only 13,796 feet of Mauna Kea stands above sea level, however, if you measure it from its base, which is below sea level, it is 33,465 feet. If you stand Mauna Kea and Mount Everest next to each other, Mount Kea would be 4400 feet taller

Everyone says Mt Everest; but by some definitions, this is not correct.

Mt Everest has the higest elevation, and its peak is the furthest point above sea level.

However, if by 'tallest' you meant the tallest from the mountain's foot, then Mauna Kea in Hawaii is actually quite a bit taller than Everest; because Mauna Kea's root is several thousand metres BELOW sea level.

Then again; if you were referring to the point where the mountain stuck out into space the furthest (say, if looking from the moon with a powerful telescope), then the point on earth furthest from the centre of the earth would actually be the summit of mt Chimborazzo in Ecuador. This is because the earth bulges slightly at the equator as a result of its rotation (but sea level also bulges the same amount, so Everest is still the highest in elevation)
