I have been dancing for years. Here is my take on it.

If spending your time hugging woman is gay and spending your time surrounded by men is macho, Then I must be LESBIAN because I would rather hug the women then the men, and I only go out with women.

No, I think if he took it for 3 years and then quit he probably had other reasons. If he thought it was gay he wouldn't wanna touch it with a 9 foot pole.
3 years is when many people quit ballroom. Usually, 3 years is the part of the learning curve when you really have to push it to feel the improvement, when you're getting bored with syllabus steps but advanced steps are way too hard for you bacuse your technique isn't strong enough. If you dance 3 years with social goals in mind you start noticing hey it's been 3 years, I dance pretty well but I'm still single.
I like what JJ says. I think many ballrrom guys subscribe to it though. My dance partner says something along those lines too when I tease him that he's the best fashion consultant I know and he moves too well for a straight guy. Then he grabs me and dips me all the way to the floor and says that no guy can pull it off and get away with anything like that if he wasn't a ballroom dancer.

Yeah I took some classes with my wife and it really was fun. But you got the right idea, it is hard for us guys to get over the fact we may look sissylike. However, what I realized is that all women pretty much think a guy who can dance really well is macho.

I'm with JJ on this. Some years back co-workers were trying to get me to do freeweights with them and I was trying to get them to start dancing. The "gay" thing popped up, and I pointed out they were spending time holding onto a stiff bar; I showed them pictures of my instructors and some of the ladies I danced with, and that ended that. They still wouldn't start dancing, though.
I'm working on my Standard dances tomorrow, by the way.

Maybe guys see comps and they see that in latin lots of the men have rhinestones on their costume, they are wearing lots of fake tan and many are wearing foundation (or other types of make up) and they jump to the conclusion that dancesport is sissy
