Funnily enough that happened to my son, exactly like that the other day!!
He had passed his test, bought his car that night and then the following dinnertime got pulled by the police and given an instant fine....the person he'd bought it from had been driving around with the plates on for 4 mths.
And yes, I agree with the others I feel they were being a bit over zealous....but that's the police for you. They could have been a bit more lenient, and given him 24 hrs to get new ones, but chose not to!!
O'h well that's life!! xXx

Why didn't you ask the police officer who did you to tell you WHY they were illegal. Was it the colours or the spacing? Just get new plates! After being fined, you stand no chance of proving any sort of innocence.

I don't think you can use ignorance of the law as a defence. Sorry. The copper must have been a right fascist not to let you off with a warning though.

It's not exactly a secret that number plates should not be mis-spaced to spell things. You were driving a car with a mis-spaced number plate- you are guilty plain and simple.
