Sorry, TMI - very little poop came out during one time he tried to go. Very thick. He keeps grunting and trying to go throughout the day, but no bowel movement. Constipated? What can I do to help him? Is he too young for diluted Prune Juice? and if not, how much can i give him?

My doctor advised me give a teaspoon of prune juice in a bottle everyday for a week. It didn't help so she then advised me to give him 1/2 ounce apple juice with 3 ounces of water. He was about 8 weeks old at the time. There was a LOT of poop, though.

They sell suppositories for baby constipation, but you may want to ask a doctor first. Hope he feels better soon, poor baby.

Follow these tips for help in curing and preventing constipation in kids:
· avoid foods high in fat and sugars
· eat plenty of fibers, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables
· drink eight glasses of fluid a day
· exercise on a daily basis
· do not hold stool for fear of missing out on some activity, when you feel like you have to use the restroom, go
· check to see if current medications are causing the constipation
When a child is experiencing constipation, providing apple juice is not a good course of action. Apple juice will cause the child to have diarrhea, but do nothing for the impacted stool already sitting in the body. The diarrhea will find away around the impacted stool and come out during the use of a restroom, but the impacted stool will remain in the body. If your child is experiencing constipation, your doctor can prescribe an over the counter drug such as mineral oil, Metamucil or mild laxatives. (A word of caution: laxatives can be dangerous when given to a child, do not give your child a laxative without the direct consent of your child's pediatrician.) But if the constipation is more severe, your doctor will need to give your child an enema.
If your child eats a well-balanced meal on a daily basis, exercises, and drinks enough liquids, and constipation becomes an ongoing problems, seek the advice of your medical doctor. Your may have an illness that needs to be treated.
Or over the counter stool softener for children.

I wouldn't give him prune juice he is too young. Babies can go days before pooping, their bodies only get rid of the stuff they don't need. I found this online maybe it will help you. if you are still concerned call your pediatrician.

Babies will strain from time to time to move the stool along through the intestines. If you want to do something when babies grunt, push, or strain, try picking them up to get gravity to help them in their efforts, or try holding the knees against the chest to help them "squat" -- the natural poop position. Straining is usually normal. Crying while straining may be a sign of constipation.

You don't need to take him to the doc just yet. Use prune juice (he is old enough) and just call your doc and ask advice about this. He may suggest a suppository stool softner that is safe for babies.

Only if the poo is black or does not pass at all for 5 days, then go to the doc right away. Black poo and prolonged constipation is a sign of a bowel blockage.

Silverbellrings- you have no idea what you are talking about. 4-5 regular adult laxatives can kill a baby. Never give OTC laxatives to an infant!

More fluids wether it is water, formula or breast milk. If your breast feeding you need to drink more water and feed him more frequently. If hes formula fed your doctor may want to switch him. Ask the pediatrician.I breastfed and my daughter had to get an stool softner for her - rectally at 3 weeks. Boy was that fun! Good luck. I wouldnt do prune juice hes too young after all you dont start giving your baby food till after 3 months you certainly dont give them juice without speaking to a physician. A parenting magazine is not a good source for advice. I have 4 children!

This happened to my little girl at that age. I called the doctor and he said to dilute a little prune juice (maybe 2Tb.) in 4 oz. of boiled water. It worked just fine, and without any discomfort for her. Poor little poopsters. Isn't it hard to see them like that? :(

When my daughter was a baby 25 years ago she had the same problem. I called the doctor he said to take her temp. Dip a rectal thermometer in Vaseline and take the baby temp it will stimulate him to move his bowels. It worked for my baby. Good luck, I hope this helps.

If it's been three days and he's really straining to do the doo, give him a baby glycerin suppository - it'll make him push his dirt out in 10-20 minutes.

Get some white Karo Syrup and put about teaspoon or two in his formula. If you are nursing him then put it in a bit of water.

This was the recommend of my childrens peditrician many years ago. It really works...

Take that child to the doctors NOW. He's too young to suffer like that. He could have a problem with his bowels that only a doctor can fix and if you wait too long, you could lose your child.

GO NOW. The ER is always open.

BTW, your child is too young for prune juice and corn syrup can cause problems for him and has sometimes been found to have harmful bacteria in it. Why take chances with his life? Go now and get him checked out.
