How about tickets to a show or a weekend pass to a local zoo? Something that shows some effort on your part but includes the fam as well.

Be careful not to pick an overly personal present. If your boss is super professional, get him something nice for his office. Engraved business card holder, really nice pen set. If he has a fun nature, get him something fun, thinkgeek.com is a great place to find fun items. Stay away from wife type things, like ties, belts, and colognes. This helps keep ackwardness between boss you and wife.

I agree that a gift card to a restaurant his family could all enjoy would be a great idea. Or maybe if you don't want to go that route you could get him a nice gift basket. They make all kinds of them and if you can't find the exact kind you want you could make one. If he likes golf do a golf themed basket, if he and his wife enjoy wine then do a wine themed basket.
