And do you usually need a building permit to install it, or just a final inspection?

First of all you do need a permit from your city or town as this will be sent to the fire inspector for final inspection and approval. You must also send a copy of the inspection to your insurance company so if there is ever a fire you will still be covered. Wood stoves usually have minimum and maximum exposure as far as being installed near walls, floor and ceilings. I would see what the town recommends for that stove. Each town is different and each stove is different, I suggest you see what the requirements are and do all that pre-prep work, tile on floor, wall protection etc and have a professional do the flue and pipe work. This way you know it will be done right and safely.

for a couple hundred bucks sometimes it is worth letting a professional do it.for house insurance reason also.you would not want to void your policy with out knowing and burning your place down.you may need the fire inspector check it out
