She has unreasonable expectations. Tell her life is not like MTV. You should not have let her build her expectations so high in the first place.
You do what you can reasonably afford to do. You don't go into debt to do more.
When I turned 16, my mom baked me a cake, my friends decorated my locker at school, and I went out to a ball game that night with my boyfriend. Some girls had Sweet Sixteen parties back then, but most didn't. I don't know when it become the fashion to spend vast sums of money on an extravagant teenager's party, but I'm not sure it's the best direction for the culture to take...

She will be really crushed. Why don't you ask all off her friends if they can contribute to make it a big party. Maybe one of them could bring the cake. Another could bring the decorations. One could bring speakers. I am sure her frinds would be happy to help. When you are 16 presents are not as important so instead of asking for gifts you ask for peoople to help. Costo is a great place to get food for cheep. Diddims is a great place for decorations. If you tell her she can't have her sweet sixteen she is going to think it is unfair, and probably blame her cirrcumstances on being in the system.

I hated having a x-mas birthday. Mine is one week before x-mas. I never had a sweet 16 party, and I lived. I would allow her to have a sleep over with some of her firends and then in a few months, try to throw her something nice. if you are just tight on money all around, then you should explain this to her and ask her what would make it special in an inexpensive way.

I should have all the right answers for this since I am 17 but I never had a sweet 16. What type of person is she?? What does she like to do?? That might help you. Maybe get all her friends to go out to dinner and pitch in.....like a nice restuarant, then hang out afterwards. limo would be nice but that is too expensive--everyone can get really dressed up in high heels (if they can walk in them) and have a party at home

You can have a nice party without spending a fortune. Maybe her friends would be willing to bring a covered dish, and you have a potluck. Or you could have a lot of people in the afternoon or after meal time, and just serve desserts and punch. I don't know your financial or personal situation, but this could be very important to her, so please make an effort to do something special for her.

Tell her the truth. If she's mature, she'll accept it. But do have some friends of hers over and make sure she gets birthday presents. You can have a great party on a shoestring budget. All it takes is some imagination.
