The group that recently led a successful drive to legalize marijuana in Denver, Colorado, USA, campaigned on the idea that it is fundamentally safer than alcohol. No possibility of overdose, less violent crime (including rape), less possibility of addiction, etc. People also do not get into such a stupor that they can't remember having sex and don't know if they consented or not.

Is this one example where people would be a lot safer if they used marijuana instead of getting drunk?

Yes, it does make it better as well.

So I've been told. By others. A long time ago. (Laughs nervously.)

And since my Mom usually comes and answers all of my questions...this is only hypothetical, of course. I never, ever, tried it and wouldn't have inhaled if I did.

Ashleigh: I feel compelled to respond to your post. I value your opinion, and I take it seriously, and I'm sure you're not making up what you wrote.

I also think that the pool of people you're working with is not representative. You're talking about people that have been put in jail for serious crimes.

I think it's more one of those "criminals like to smoke pot" rather than a "pot causes people to become criminals" kind of issue.

That's a good point, though...if I remember correctly from stoned sex, it goes on for ages and you both have to take a nacho chip and chocolate chip cookie-dough break in the middle somewhere.

Hypothetical huh! You and Bill are both non-inhalers. Do you plan to run for president on the legalize hemp plank?
seriously, any drug when used to excess causes issues. Whether it is legal, prescription or street. Some people use alcohol as a crutch, some use street drugs. Pot is least harmful of all, but will have a difficult time ever being legalized.

I like the term "fundamentally safer than alcohol". Did anyone bother to check their facts, especially as with regards the number of diminished responsibility related acts of stupidity that are perpetrated by marijuana users? If ever you get a chance to work with drug users in a corrective services environment you will soon learn that they are just as bad, if not worse, than your average drunk. Yes, they too do commit crimes of a violent nature. The difference is that they do not acknowledge their inherent responsibility for their own actions.

Since I'll be 70 in January, I feel slightly safer to admit that I have smoked the weed and enjoyed it. I've also worked with alcohol and drug addicts and never did see anyone come in that was addicted to marijuana. I absolutely get your point that alcohol, drugs and cigarettes cause way more problems than MJ. I never remember seeing a violent person who was smoking a joint. If someone can legalize it-I'd be the first to vote for it. Denver you say. Hmmmm

That is a good proposal. A better answer is for date rape to be disrespected by men, and not silently approved. Men should be more adamant against rape than women. They have to marry women, and since one out of three will suffer rape in their life, in the US, It is probable that the woman they love will be affected, harming their possibilities of having the healthy sex life that they both deserve.

Marijuana was prohibited in America, and then in other countries somewhat allied with it, like my own, in order to prevent Countries like Venezuela or colombia from becoming more wealthy, because it is indeed safer from alcohol, which was kept legal because of tradition, and tobacco, which was kept legal because the US was making money with it.

As an ex smoker myself (yes, I will admit to using) I would have to say it's safer than alcohol and possibly cigarettes (they are still debating that one). But they are trying to remove alcohol and cigarettes so chances are unlikely it will not be legalized anytime soon.

Edit to Tracey: I love you. hahahaha.
