Well, Melatonin, L-Tryptophan, 5-HTP, Scullcap (an herb... it just sounds bad), L-Taurine, and Passionflower are all very popular to help people sleep naturally. Some people have a preference of one over another, but that really depends on how your body responds to any of the ingredients and what's causing your insomnia. Ultimately, discussing this with a doctor (preferably a sleep specialist) would be the best way to find the best answer for your insomnia..... but these at least give a good start without knowing more info. I would stay away from any drug-based sleeping pills as you can become dependent on them rather easily as they only help the symptom, not the cause. Good luck!

Yes to oldtimek.....'s answer. Melatonin is good, but start with a small dose and work up until you get restful sleep. But, insomnia can also be caused by a variety of things. You may need to be more specific about your general health and lifestyle for a recommendation that fits your needs. As the second poster said, exercise also helps, but not too close to bedtime. Lights down in the evening, low light is the cue to your body to produce melatonin naturally to aid in sleep. High light until bedtime will keep you awake. One study even suggested sitting in a dark room in front of a bright computer monitor was the same as high light.

In addition I'd like to say that Milk Thistle seed helped immensely for me. I found that my sleep disruption was caused by liver function - search "liver night waking" to see if liver function is an issue. 350-700 mg per night and I am able to fall asleep and sleep through until 5 a.m. It has been a blessing.

If you want to add more detail so we can maybe pin it down more specifically that would be great. I'll check back in later.

Don't be fooled into taking prescription sleeping pills, what they do is make you close your eyes while you are still awake. They have little positive effect on the body and trick you into thinking you had restful sleep while giving you a hoard of potential side effects to be concerned with. Use them only as a last resort. . .hopefully you will find a more natural method.

Sweet dreams.

Hey Smoochy!!!! I'm finally back in my house and I got my new Pearl drumkit! I never really listened to anything from The Cure, and the song you posted isn't really my cup of tea. At least not right now, since I usually go back to bands I thought were okay before and give them another listen.

Definitely try exercise first. Then get sunlight during the day. It helps to reset your internal clock and helps your body produce proper amounts of seratonin and melatonin. Then, before bed, use aromatherapy (lavender or peppermint oil) to wind down and destress. Sip on a cup of chamomile or peppermint tea. Both are very soothing. Then as your lying in bed, do deep breathing exercises. Inhale slowly for a count of 4 and exhale slowly to a count of 8. Try to clear your mind as you're doing this and relax all your muscles. It'll help you to get good quality sleep. Sweet dreams!

-Take a hot bath or shower at bedtime which will promote sound sleep.
-Take a glass of milk, sweetened with honey (with or without a pinch of nutmeg) every night half an hour before bedtime.
