would you suggest i put the side pieces on before i put the top on or visa ersa?

It depends on which way you anticipate the overlapping veneers or laminates will receive the most sideways force that could catch on the edges. If you'll be sliding things on or off of the table a lot (like a dining room table), put the sides on first and then the top. If it's more of a bar height that people will be brushing in up-and-down motions with their forearms as they get seated or leave, do the opposite.

Either way, it will reduce the chance of catching if you trim the corner with a chamfer instead of a straight cut.

I have always put the sides on first and then the top. That way the top overlays the sides and there is less chance of something catching the sides and pulling them off.

yes the sides 1st that way the laminate will cover the edges

sides first then the top.......can be a real pain if done wrong....real pain....plus that stuff is sharp. So be careful i know a guy who cut his jugular
