We visited for 3 days in Septmeber to see a baseball game. We really enjoyed the Motown museum, which has a great tour, you even get to sing in the famous studio! We also liked the Henry Ford museum in Dearborn - especially the factory tour (I think it's called the Rouge factory?)
Downtown has some fantastic old buldings, early skyscrapers, but a lot of it is really run down and a bit depressing. The riverside walk and the park are a bit bleak, but the views are nice.
Greektown and Bricktown were the best places in the evening, with good bars and restaurants.
We didn't feel unsafe anywhere, I think the reputation is exaggerated. The people were actually really friendly and helpful to these two Brits!

If you have a passport, you should visit Canada; it's only a bridge away! The casino there is b-e-a-utiful. Also, Greektown is nice. It really depends what you want to see. If you prefer to view the city's history, Henry Ford Museum IS a good place to go to along with the Detroit Institute of Arts..it's one of the nicest museums for art in America.
If you want to just have fun and socialize, Birmingham is a nice place to visit - it's a suburb of Detroit and is good for entertainment. This time of the year the famous Campus Martius is open for ice skating..sounds lame but it's nice. If parties and clubs are your "thing" check out Pontiac, MI; but it really depends on what you want to see and do.

Go to the casino if you want to gamble or see the shows. For culture, the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Historical Museum, both of which are absolutely outstanding. If you are leaving the city itself, there is all kinds of stuff going on in the suburbs. The best place to find things to do in Detroit and the metro area is clickondetroit.com.
