No, it is not. The company that make the software can require you to delete and destroy all copies of it. It's in the contract you agreed to when you installed the software.

When you purchase software, you do not own it. You are only purchasing a license to use it, and the End User License Agreement states what you can and cannot do with it.

The next question is: How will they find out if you do? Depends on the software. Some goes through an activation process, and if they find that the same serial number is being used for both, they could investigate.

No, it's not legal. People do it anyway. I say it's not like you are stealing money from someone. If you trust the friend then do it only this once and make sure that they know you are putting your neck out there for them. Make sure it's a friend who would do the same for you someday or I wouldn't do it at all.
