I just realized that most people don't seem to know this. Most regular Christmas lights have a warning on the box and/or cord tag that says the coating for the wires contains lead and that you should wash your hands after you handle the lights. And obviously you shouldn't let kids play with the lights. How many people out there knew this? I'm curious because there have been so many recalls lately of things that contain lead, but Christmas lights are never mentioned.

So all you haters know - I don't actually care about this myself. I don't even have kids, and I wash my hands after I put up lights anyway. But I know people who don't. And there's also the issue of pets chewing on wires... hopefully you don't let your kids eat Christmas lights, but pets can be sneaky about it sometimes.

I wasn't trying to be an alarmist, just a good samaritan. Gosh. Why is everyone so negative and hateful online? I didn't throw out any personal attacks...

Wow! I honestly think I remember reading that tag once when I was a little bit younger, but too young to actually realize the danger. Actually, now I am recalling it was a cord on the toaster, and me and my sister refused to touch it, and would use paper towels or gloves to plug it in.
But I think they should make it more well known that they contain lead, because as you said, there are many things being recalled due to lead, but why not Christmas Lights? I mean honestly, who reads those tags?
Well, thanks for informing me, and the rest of the people at Yahoo Answers! I'll be more careful this holiday season.
Merry Christmas!

The reason the focus is in on toys is because TODDLERS might put them in their mouth or not frequently wash their hands. Also, a lot of parents don't wipe toys down regularly. So.. if any of that concerns you, don't buy or keep lead based toys.

Now the lights, my kids have never even touched. Much less put in their mouth. Why wouldn't someone wash their hands after handling factory lights?I just don't understand.

If you are not putting lead based products in your mouth, if you are washing hands frequently and eating a healthy diet- you're safe. The big bad lead won't get you.

Yes, I knew this.. but the lead in the lights is only dangerous if you remove the light itself and start messing with the wires. Otherwise, the lights are harmless.. but not a good idea to have if you have children that like taking things apart. Best wishes!

I've known Christmas lights have lead in them for many years but I don't get WHY THE HECK WOULD THESE ASSHOLE MANUFACTURERS WOULD PUT LEAD IN THEIR CHRISTMAS LIGHTS. Frankly, this should be ILLEGAL! Regardless if there's a warning label on it, it still should be illegal for them to put lead in it in the first place. There seriously needs to be a recall on these! And I can't even sue any manufacturers for putting lead in their Christmas lights because they put that warning label on them. I can't stand it anymore! I'm going to look for some lead free Christmas lights and ALL manufacturers NEED to STOP putting lead in their Christmas lights.

GET THIS MESSAGE OUT TO EVERYBODY AND HOPE FOR A HUGE RECALL ON THESE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS!

Glad you are aware of this. Have a good Christmas this year! :)

There are so many things made in China or other countries that are not safe that it would take forever to mention all, but you right...all of the attention has been on toys so far. Personally, I just wont use them or look for those that are safe (if there is such a thing).
