Also the fact that richer people lived in the safety of high walled castles and could again ... look down on people.

It was probably from royal or noble people who were either seated above everyone else, being carried in a litter, therefore being higher than everyone else, or who were standing as other people bowed to them. It probably had nothing to do with height.

Most definitely. Stereotypically, people still think this, however absently. It's ridiculous (even being someone who's tall, I can say that this is absurd; but that's the way life is.)

I think it meant that the person looked down his nose on the other person because he had his nose in the air, like a snob !!
