To the contrary -- what a DELIGHTFUL child you must have been! Your parents must have thoroughly enjoyed that phase of your life.
Childrens' brains do not fully develop -- physically -- during childhood. Some people (esp. males) continue to develop physiologically well into their twenties, even. It isnt a lack of anything, it is simply a growth process.
Remember while you were pond poking, tho...you werent just blankly poking the water; you were thinking, dreaming, imagining, cementing information, planning, hoping, praying, etc etc. Am I right? That is all very important for little minds, so that they can continue to assimilate information and grow to their potential.
How blessed you were to have the freedom of a happy childhood, in order to acheive the necessary requirements for your development. Think about it..inner city kids rarely have that luxury (pond poking!) and in some countries, children are preoccupied with survival rather than play.
Thats what adults are really doing most of the time, being concerned with survival needs -- although on a much grander and luxurious scale, I must admit -- debt, mortgages, income, job performance, stuff like that.
I read somewhere long ago -- don't remember who wrote it --
"ALL THE CHILDREN MUST DIE...AND WE CALL THEIR CORPSES 'ADULTS' "

Well, theson is that children see the world in a different way. Their brains respond to situations different to adults. When children are still developing, their learning of the world around them changes.
When a child is still an infant, they see the world from a very personal point of view, its all about things and solid things around them that they can see and touch.
As they grow, they become more self aware, and then everything is about them, for example they draw pictures of themselves etc. Reacting to the world around them.
because they have this view, they have no committments that adults do, and therefore they are still exploring the world around them, that is why a child is more prone to attention on small "insignificant things", they need the new experiences to grow and learn, and this schema is what they are building everyday.

not odd at all, very common. If you watch animals they learn/practice life skills through play. There happens to be many similarities in the youth of creatures/children. Kids are also amused because everything in life is new and wonderful, because they are naive and innocent, willing to trust and try almost anything. More open and accepting. Which puts them more in the path of dangers........On the other hand, these are also the years, in which children can be damaged the worst, psychologically, for the rest of their lives.

Children have what is called 'crystalized learning' they learn like a sponge soaks water. That's illustrated by the fact that by the time they are in kindergarten they can recite a dirty joke dad told word for blessed word. They are also super curious. And if you are lucky it never ends. I learn something new every day. And I am a grandma.

Good thing you did not grow up in Cuba the UN frowns on holding both spiders and mad bombers prisoners there. And if you had grown up when there were dinosaurs the frogs would eat you. Good thing to you don't sound like an asset to the gene pool to me

You probably didn't seem odd to your parents because most kids are like this. Or they are when pried away from their video games. I guess we adults aren't so easily amused because we have already "been there and done that" when it comes to fishing for tadpoles, catching grasshoppers, and mixing different breakfast cereals together :)

A better question is, why are adults by and large so dull?
No Santa, no more 'magic', just dulldrum.
