I've actually known quit a few 'cutters.' One in particular comes to mind. To relieve herself of stress, sadness, and any other emotion she makes slashed into her wrist. Everyone around her, excluding any adult or parent-like figures, knew that this was happening and no one even bothered to stop her. She not hurting anyone, we said.
It continued for about two years, until she was seventeen. Her father was in the for something that I can not remember. Me and another friend were there consoling her and the rest of the family (We'd known eachother for years and it was sort of customary to console other families in a time of need.) In the hospital, she started shaking pretty bad. Everyone wracked it up to nerves, but the younger people knew differently. She desperately needed to cut. It had become an addiction to her, just like any type of drug.
That night (I do not pretend to have all the details on this portion, but I have put together most of the details), she went home by herself to an empty house. A friend told me that she offered to accompany her, but she refused. Her mother came home to find her laying in the bathroom, dead from a slit to the wrist that was deeper than her usual cuts.
Going to her funeral was one of the saddest occasions that I ever had to do. I blame myself for her death, as do many of her other friends. We told ourselves that she wasn't hurting anyone. We lied to ourselves and we're the only ones to blame for that.

Something I've found is that cutting is a tick people have. They see it as punishment for themselves. The usually hide it and feel that they deserve to physically need punishment for something that is wrong. They are not necessarily suicidal, but just conditioned to believe that they need punishment for their wrong doings.
Another explanation for cutting is the fact that cutting (or any type of pain) causes the release of endorphins in to the system.
Endorphins are the body's natural "morphine-like substance" that the body releases as a result of pain or stress. Like a mild morphine, endorphins produce a slight feeling of euphoria (very mild however).
The euphoric feelings cause a sense of well being. Problems seem to float away. You no longer feel stressed or upset.
Beyond the scientific explanation, cutting is never a good thing. Its merely a bandaid for a larger problem. Cutting never solves anything. It just covers it up until the rush is gone and you have to face reality again.
Why cause yourself damage when you can just face your problems and move on?

Like some of the people who have already answered your question, cutting is bad because of the infections you could get, the scars, and eventually death. I think you know all this though. People who cut, cut because they DO care. They feel so much pain that they want to make themselves numb, or feel in control of something. You need to just stop before you end of killing yourself, because eventually that will happen if you continue this way. I hope this helps.

It's not good to mutilate yourself... you need to talk to someone about why you do it & get help with that issue or issues. Talk to a counselor @ school if you are still in school or look for a group in your area. Something is causing you to that whether you know it or not. I had a freind that did the same thing all her life. After her son was born, she did it again & had to go to the hospital because it was pretty bad. They took her son because she was unwilling to get help. So now it affects his little life, not only hers... Take care.

Yup, you need to see a therapist.
Seriously.. you are having to do something that is HURTFUL to your body in order to stop feeling bad. That is NOT a good thing.

well, i have done it many times. the reason i did it was b´coz i saw it as an alternative form of crying. it´s not so bad as long as u don´t cut urself much enough so as to die. let little blood flow & u´ll feel better. it´s a weird kind of satisfaction, esp. when ur very sad or ´depressed. but mind u, except for one time, I have always done it under substance influence & not when I was sober.
