Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a pretty common weed. You'll often find it growing in the worst, dry, sandy or gravelly soil.

It is a biennial. In the first year of its growth, it produces a basal rosette of large, fuzzy, silvery green leaves. The second year it produces tall spikes of small yellow flowers.

Mullein leaves are wonderful as a remedy for respiratory problems, like bronchitis and asthma. Its really great for dry, hacking coughs too. It is soothing to mucous membranes, helps to loosen & expel phlegm, and reduce inflammation in the bronchial passages. When you prepare it as a tea, you just need to be careful to strain out all those little hairs, because they can be irritating.

The leaves can also be applied externally as a compress or poultice to reduce glandular, and other types of swellings, and for bruises and sprains. I've had really great results using this for Mumps and Tonsilitis.

I also infuse the flowers in olive oil, to make an antiseptic, healing ear oil.

Do you need information for a project, or have you discovered a plant and are wondering what you can do with it?

Mullein - it is a favorite of mine. We used it to treat my daughter's Whooping Cough (and yes she WAS vaccinated, that is why we don't vax anymore).

We use it often here for anything respiratory. The plant grows wild in many areas of the US. My mom dries it and sends it to us from Maine. We put the dry leaves in a tea sifter and steep in boiling hot water for 8-10 minutes.

We just ran out yesterday :-( I need to find an alternate source for the rest of the winter. Anyone who knows? Maybe it will help the poster locate some too?
