There's a book called Confederates in the Attic, by Tony Horvitz, about re-enacting. Then you should look for newspaper articles (the New York Times Index covers only that one paper, but there's another index that covers many major US papers--just ask a librarian), and look in the Reader's Guide for magazine articles.

If you have enough time, you can also go to some living history encampments and interview some of the "toy soldiers." You may find an encampment in Gettysburg even at this time of year (They put kerosene heaters in their tents.)

Also in Gettysburg, where the battle seems to be the town's leading industry, there are lots of shops selling very authentic replicas of Civil War items. Since re-enactors have been known to argue over the proper size of uniform buttons, you should find some information that way..

Then you should check online for what's going on in Fredericksburg, VA, and Murfreesboro, TN, about now. Battles took place in or near those towns in December, so there may be some commemorative activities scheduled there in the very near future.

Closer to home, if you live in a state that was a state at the time of the war, check your local historical society for information on men from your area who served. There may even be a recreation of a local regiment.

As for actual history, you can certainly use the actual events
as something by which to measure the recreated history going on today.

You might do well to contact some of the groups that do the major battles and talk to people who do it. They're usually very enthusiastic about their participation.
